SINGAPORE: One person was taken to hospital for burn injuries and smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a recycling centre in Kranji on Wednesday (Feb 19).
Firefighters have got the blaze “under control” after a nearly six-hour battle that began at about 10.30am, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in a 4pm update on Facebook.
However, the structure of the building remains unstable and the fire is still burning, it added.
Six water jets, four unmanned firefighting machines, an unmanned aerial vehicle, as well as a combined platform ladder were deployed in the operation, which SCDF expects to be prolonged, it said.
In an earlier post, SCDF said the fire was “well alight” when it arrived and it involved waste materials in a warehouse measuring about 50m by 50m.
The warehouse is located at 11 Kranji Crescent – the listed address of recycling and waste management firm Wah & Hua on its webpage. The Straits Times has sent queries to the firm.
SGSecure app users, M1, StarHub and Singtel mobile subscribers in the vicinity of the blaze received alerts to steer clear of the area.
Traffic is building up as the firefighting operation continues. SCDF is asking for understanding from members of the public to avoid nearby roads and take alternative routes instead.
This is the third reported fire at the address since 2018.
In March 2024, 25 people were evacuated in an early morning ignition that ravaged a processing area about 400 sq m, a space slightly smaller than a basketball court.
The fire took three hours to extinguish. At the height of the operation, four water jets, two foam jets and an unmanned firefighting machine were deployed. - The Straits Times/ANN
