Over 30 kilogrammes seized in Phnom Penh drug raids over past week

PHNOM PENH (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): Two young men have been sent to court and charged in connection with two trafficking operations that were broken up by the authorities this week. More than 30 kilogrammes of narcotics were seized in the two busts.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court announced on February 12 that Phnom Penh anti-drug authorities, in cooperation with the Meanchey district police, conducted a February 6 raid on a rented room in Borey Damnak Meanchey, located in Stung Meanchey 3 commune’s Damnak Thom 3 village, in Meanchey district.

Officers discovered approximately 15 kilogrammes of drugs at the scene, including 1,052 packets of MDMA (Ecstasy) powder weighing more than 13 kilogrammes, two packets of ketamine weighing over 254 grammes, and 10 packets of a clear white crystalline substance suspected to be ketamine, weighing 886 grammes. The room’s occupant was not present when the raid took place.

The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Nhy Chanvut. He was arrested the following day in Svay Rieng province’s Svay Chrum district by anti-drug officers, working with the district police.

After questioning, he was referred to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for legal proceedings.

The court prosecutor charged Chanvut and an unnamed accomplice with conspiracy, transportation, trafficking and illegal possession of narcotic substances. The offenses allegedly took place at the rented room and across Phnom Penh from November 2024 until February 6 this year.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and hope to identify the other individuals involved in the case.

In a separate case, the Anti-Drug Department, in collaboration with the Phnom Penh police, busted a drug trafficking operation on February 10.

According to a February 12 National Police report, the officers seized nearly 20 kilogrammes of narcotics and made one arrest.

The raid took place along Street 220, in Phsar Deum Kor commune’s Village 9, in Tuol Kork district.

A suspect, identified as 20-year-old Heng Samnang, was found to be in possession of 18 packets of ketamine, totalling 17.928 kilogrammes.

Samnang and the seized evidence have been transferred to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for further legal action. - Phnom Penh Post/ANN
