Indonesia steps up efforts against radicalisation with new task force

JAKARTA (Bernama): Indonesia’s National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) has established a new task force to strengthen its counter-radicalisation efforts and prevent terrorism.

Commissioner General of Police Eddy Hartono said the task force, which brings together representatives from multiple ministries and agencies, aims to strengthen collaboration, streamline programmes, and align national efforts to curb radicalisation.

In a statement on Friday, he said the initiative aims to address the growing challenges of extremist ideologies and is expected to strengthen the country’s resilience and national security.

"The team is focused on addressing current threats and halting the spread of extremist ideologies across Indonesia through strategic, integrated, systematic, and sustainable efforts,” he said, adding that the task force marks a strategic step to ensure the counter-radicalisation initiatives are implemented effectively.

Indonesia has successfully prevented terrorist attacks over the past two years, thanks to effective law enforcement using a preventive strike approach.

The country, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, faces radicalism, with terror networks exploiting social and digital platforms for recruitment and propaganda.

Last year, authorities blocked 180,954 online content pieces linked to intolerance, radicalism, extremism, and terrorism. - Bernama
