VIENTIANE: The 600MW Monsoon Wind Power Project, under construction in Xekong and Attapeu provinces, is expected to be connected to the Vietnamese electricity grid next month to facilitate power export planned for the second quarter of this year.

Under a 25-year power purchase agreement, electricity generated by the wind farm, the largest in Southeast Asia, will be sold to Vietnam Electricity (EVN) through a transmission line stretching for 71 kilometres, of which 27 kilometres is in Laos.

Operators plan to transmit 300MW of power to Vietnam in the second quarter of 2025 followed by 600MW in the third quarter, when power generation has increased. In the future, it is envisaged that power production capacity will expand to 1,000MW.

The plan of operation was reported to Party Secretary General and State President Thongloun Sisoulith and his delegation when they visited the project in Dakcheung district, Xekong province, on January 14.

The President expressed his appreciation to the companies and shareholders who had put so much effort into planning and building the wind farm, which is close to completion, a report on Lao National Television stated.

The leader advised the operators of the Monsoon Wind Power Project to ensure that the immediate environment is properly protected.

He also recommended that they assist local people to grow crops and raise animals to provide food for project staff and at the same time earn more income.

The Monsoon Wind Power Project is located in Xekong and Attapeu provinces under a concession contract that began on December 1, 2022, with a production capacity of 600MW and a project value of US$960 million.

Construction of the wind farm began on March 2023 and is scheduled for completion by the end of this month. Of the 133 wind turbines being installed, 90 percent have been erected.
