Electricity exports lead Laos’ trade revenue in 2024


VIENTIANE (Laotian Times): In 2024, electricity exports continued to lead Laos’ export revenues, generating nearly US$980 million and accounting for 15.35 percent of total exports, according to the Department of Foreign Trade.

The country’s total trade volume for the year reached US$16.35 billion, with exports valued at US$8.14 billion and imports at US$8.21 billion. This resulted in a trade deficit of approximately US$64 million.

In addition to electricity, key exports included potash salt, gold, electrical appliances, rubber, and paper. Major export markets were China, Thailand, and Vietnam, which together accounted for over 80 percent of Laos’ exports.

On the import side, primary goods included diesel fuel, machinery, and vehicles, with Thailand and China remaining the largest import partners.

For comparison, in 2023, electricity exports topped the list, contributing US$2.38 billion to Laos’ export revenue. - Laotian Times
