Indonesia signs deal with Qatar investor to build on million affordable houses

JAKARTA: Indonesia's government signed on Wednesday (Jan 8) a memorandum of understanding with an investor from Qatar to build one million affordable homes, one of President Prabowo Subianto's flagship programmes.

Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait (pic) signed the agreement with Qatari Sheikh Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Al Thani, chairman of Qilaa International Group, at the presidential palace, witnessed by Prabowo.

"We prioritise the lower middle class who live in the cities," Maruarar told reporters, referring to those who the one million homes will be built for.

The government will provide the land to build the apartments, while the investor will become the contractor as well as financing the project.

During his campaign, Prabowo has said he wants to build three million dwellings annually, in villages and cities to support the lower middle class. - Reuters
