Over 1,800 HIV cases reported in Laos in first 11 months of 2024

VIENTIANE: A total of 1,896 new HIV cases were reported in Laos from January to November 2024, bringing the cumulative total to 22,584 cases since 1990, according to a recent report from the Ministry of Health.

The report, from the Centre of Information and Education for Health under the Lao Ministry of Health, noted that the National AIDS Committee meeting was held recently to review efforts to achieve the United Nations' 95-95-95 targets by 2025.

These global benchmarks aim for 95 per cent of people with HIV to know their status, 95 per cent of those diagnosed to begin treatment, and 95 per cent of those treated to achieve suppressed viral loads.

Currently, Laos operates 196 testing facilities and a growing network of treatment centres across its 18 provinces.

Lao government's efforts to combat the epidemic include strengthening services, increasing public awareness, and expanding preventive measures to protect vulnerable groups. - Xinhua
