Two missing after Indian navy submarine collides with fishing boat near Goa


NEW DELHI (Bernama): Two individuals were missing following a collision between an Indian navy submarine and a fishing vessel on Thursday evening.

A massive search and rescue operation has been launched by the Indian Navy, which has deployed six ships and aircraft.

Eleven of the fishing boat's 13 crew members were saved by other vessels after the incident 70 nautical miles off the coast of Goa, local media reported on Friday, citing navy officials.

The navy vessel involved in the collision was a Scorpene-class submarine, is named Marthoma, and has advanced stealth features and carries long-range guided torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.

"Search and rescue efforts for the remaining two are underway and are being coordinated with Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mumbai (MRCC).

"Additional assets including from the Coast Guard have been diverted to the area to augment the efforts," the statement from the ARmay read.- Bernama
