BRICS to continue developing new payment platforms next year, says Russian foreign minister

MOSCOW (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti): BRICS will continue work on new payment platforms in the upcoming year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday, reported Sputnik/Ria Novosti.

The dollar has been turned into a weapon of suppression and punishment of geopolitical competitors, the minister said, adding that this affected the dollar as the world's reserve currency and means of international settlements.

"The work on the creation of new payment platforms, as I said, was launched in BRICS under the Russian presidency and will be continued by our Brazilian successors in 2025," Lavrov said at the International Science Fiction Symposium "Creating the Future."

The minister stated that the proportion of national currencies in Russia's transactions with countries in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Eurasian Economic Union has surpassed 90 per cent, while it is approaching 65 per cent with BRICS nations.

"Russia will continue to play its important role in this process, given our position as the world's fourth largest economy according to the International Monetary Fund," Lavrov said. - Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti
