VIENTIANE: The government is considering increasing the minimum salary paid to civil servants and also the quota of personnel allocated to various sectors of government next year.

This was the key message from the government spokesperson and Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, Sonexay Sithphaxay, when giving a press conference following the government’s monthly meeting on Thursday (Oct 24), which was chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

The meeting was attended in person and online by Deputy Prime Ministers, officials from various ministries and government organisations, and provincial leaders.

Participants accepted a proposal by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the disbursement of salaries and implementation of various policies to improve the living standards of civil servants in light of the current harsh economic situation.

The meeting also agreed on the need to ensure that sufficient officials are available to continue the government’s work continuously, efficiently and productively.

Discussions also centred on attempts to resolve the problem of illegally imported and used vehicles, and persistent chronic inflation.

With regard to the illegal trade and use of vehicles, the government will enforce the relevant regulations, plug legal loopholes, and take other robust steps to resolve the problem.

The government has set up a taskforce to work with the relevant sectors to identity the specific irregularities and formulate solutions that are likely to yield results.

Concerning inflation, the government will continue to implement the agreed measures under the government’s work plan, as well as the guidelines of the Political Department of the Central Party Committee, in a determined effort to resolve the country’s economic and financial difficulties and lower the rate of inflation.

The Prime Minister will take a central role in coordinating the related sectors and parties to ensure these measures are effective.

The meeting also discussed the education performance strategy, the development of human resources, and the direction of future plans in relation to the Law on Education, Alcoholic Beverage Control Law, and the Law on Labour.

The relevant government bodies will also draft a strategic plan for the management and development of agricultural land until 2030 and a vision to 2040. - Vientiane Times/ANN
