KUALA LUMPUR: (Bernama) The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that two Malaysian citizens were released Friday (Sept 20) following an order by the Bangladeshi Court after completing their sentences for smuggling gold into Bangladesh.

"They are expected to return to Malaysia soon,” said the ministry in a statement Friday (Sept 20).

The ministry, through the High Commission of Malaysia in Dhaka, had actively provided consular assistance to both of them throughout their detention, said the statement.

"The High Commission of Malaysia will continue to assist Malaysians who require consular assistance,” it said

The Ministry reminded all Malaysians that gold smuggling is a serious crime in Bangladesh and can carry the death penalty.

"As such, the Ministry urges all Malaysians to respect local laws and regulations and refrain from engaging in any illegal activities while travelling abroad,” it said. - Bernama
