VIENTIANE: Asean capital governors and city mayors convened in Vientiane on Wednesday (Sept 18) to enhance cooperation aimed at building more resilient cities and boosting regional connectivity.

The meeting, part of the annual Asean Mayors Forum (AMF) and Meeting of Governors/Mayors of Asean Capitals (MGMAC), addressed shared challenges such as economic slowdowns, climate change, and urbanisation.

Leaders from across the region discussed strategies for improving infrastructure, fostering sustainable development, and strengthening partnerships to ensure a more connected and resilient Asean.

The meetings, chaired by Laos’ Prime Minister Sonexay Siphamdone, and attended by the Secretary-General of Asean, Dr Kao Kim Hourn, snd the Mayor of Vientiane, Dr Atsaphangthong Siphandone, brought together governors, mayors, and senior officials from Asean member states and Timor-Leste.

This year’s meeting, held under the theme “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience for Sustainable Development of Asean Cities,” marks the 12th annual gathering of local leaders from across the region since the forum’s inception in 2012.

Over the years, the MGMAC and AMF have become vital platforms for Asean capital governors and mayors to exchange lessons learned, address urban challenges, and collaborate on sustainable solutions for their cities.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Sonexay welcomed the delegates and emphasised the importance of deeper cooperation between Asean capitals.

He noted that this year’s theme aligns with Laos’ Asean Chairmanship slogan for 2024, and reflects five key areas of focus: liveable and sustainable cities, green tourism, sustainable economic development, environmentally friendly urban planning, and resilience in addressing climate change.

“The convening of the MGMAC and AMF offers a unique opportunity for local leaders to share experiences, discuss pressing challenges, and enhance partnerships across Asean cities,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister further emphasised the significance of connectivity—whether through transport, telecommunications, or digital infrastructure—as a key factor in facilitating economic growth and social development.

Strengthening partnerships and alliances among cities will be crucial for addressing shared issues, including access to resources and funding for specific projects.

He reiterated that these meetings are crucial for promoting sustainable urban development and building resilience in the face of issues such as economic slowdowns, natural disasters, epidemics, and rapid urbanisation.

The forum also served to promote dialogue between local governments, the private sector, international organisations, and academics, with a shared goal of strengthening Asean’s socio-economic system.

By sharing lessons learnt and best practices, participants aim to shape policies, guide investment, and devise solutions to pressing challenges. - Vientiane Times/ANN
