SINGAPORE: A man involved in a purported flirting incident was allegedly slashed by a group of assailants in Ang Mo Kio in the early hours of Wednesday (Aug 7).
Four men and one woman were charged in court on Aug 8 with one count each of rioting armed with a deadly weapon.
They are Faridz Nurhayyan Roslan, 23, Muhammad Syahin Ali, 22, Akief Nurhayyan Roslan, 21, Muhammad Faiz Salman Zakarihya, 25, and Siti Nurathirah Muhamad Azhar, 23.
Two other women, aged 17 and 21, are assisting with investigations, the police said in a press release.
The police were alerted to a case of assault along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at about 3.15am on Aug 7.
Officers found a man with two slash wounds on his back, and he was taken conscious to the hospital.
Investigations revealed that the victim, who is 21 years old according to court documents, was attacked by a group of four men allegedly armed with knives.
This happened after the purported flirting incident that involved a woman from the assailants’ group.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from closed-circuit television and police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of the seven people believed to be involved in the incident and arrested them on the same day.
Two knives were seized.
The case against the five individuals who were charged was adjourned to Aug 15.
For rioting while armed with a deadly weapon, they can be jailed for up to 10 years and the four men can also be caned.
The police said they have zero tolerance for such brazen acts of violence that threaten public safety.
“The police will spare no effort to apprehend those who commit violence and will take firm action against them in accordance with the law,” they added. - The Straits Times/ANN
