BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A total of 27 crocodiles have been successfully captured and moved to a rescue centre in Kampong Sinaut, under the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) to improve the safety and well-being of villagers from crocodile attacks.

According to the Wildlife Division, crocodiles can often be seen in Brunei waters, especially in residential areas, including the surrounding areas of Kampong Ayer.

The department also organised roadshows and dialogues with the public and students to raise awareness on crocodile-related matters, as well as set up crocodile warning signage in key areas and distribute awareness posters.

With the increased cooperation from government agencies, such as the Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Brunei Police Force, and the local community at large, the crocodile issue is currently being addressed.

As an additional effort from the department, experts from Crocter in Sarawak, Malaysia has been appointed since April 1 to catch stray crocodiles.

The company, on a one-year contract, has captured and relocated wild crocodiles from the surrounding waters of Kampong Ayer, as well as other areas known for its presence of crocodiles.

Crocter, along with the Wildlife Division, is also handling public complaints on crocodiles.

The Forestry Department urged the public, active in water activities, to stay alert and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings to keep wild animals at bay.

The department is also seeking public assistance to report crocodile disturbances.

The department also hopes that the public complies with the warning signage along rivers to ensure safety and well-being of the communities. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
