BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Agriculture can be a profitable business, offering opportunities for private investment or contract farming, especially in high-tech crop farming, which can increase yields and provide good returns, said Acting Director of Agriculture and Agrifood Abuzar Mohd Tahir at the closing of a five-day youth exposure programme at the AgriBusiness Centre, Kampong Rimba.

He also highlighted the programme allowed participants to learn about investment opportunities in crop farming, vegetable and fruit management with fertigation, financial management and high-tech agriculture.

The participants also visited farms of past youth programme alumni who successfully grow crops like chilli using modern technology, as well as supermarkets that connect entrepreneurs, suppliers and customers.

He expressed hope that the participants “will confidently enter private or contract farming to boost agricultural yields.

The goal is to produce committed, innovative and productive young agricultural entrepreneurs, that contribute to the sector’s gross domestic product growth.”

Meanwhile, participant Nur Adila Pureri Irwan said she found the programme transformative as it provides knowledge on farming, hydrofarming and fertigation as well as the agricultural business.

She sees the potential to make money in agriculture, especially with the support from government initiatives such as the Digital Economy Vision. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
