JAKARTA: Before leaving office on Oct 20, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has a golden opportunity to help bring long-lasting peace to the South China Sea (SCS).

He can work with Philippine President Ferdinand J. Marcos Jr to realise a special code of conduct on the contested sea among Asean members, especially those with overlapping claims or interests in the natural resource-rich waters.
