VIENTIANE: The construction of new offices and a passenger and cargo port at the Golden Triangle international border crossing in Bokeo province is now 90 per cent complete.

The progress was reported during a visit by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune and other central government officials to view the new facilities.

The Golden Triangle border crossing is located in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province (in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone) and facilitates the passage of people and goods between Chiang Rai province in Thailand, which is located on the opposite bank of the Mekong River.

The visitors were accompanied by members of the Management Board of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone along with representatives of related sectors in Bokeo province.

The purpose of the visit was to inspect the construction of new offices at the border crossing, which replace dilapidated buildings that originally opened for use in July 2012.

The upgrade is underway in order to accommodate the increasing number of people crossing the Lao-Thai border at this location.

The new building and the port have modern facilities and equipment, guaranteeing greater efficiency with regard to passenger transport, boat berths, boarding and disembarkation and other services

There are also shops and other amenities for use by people using the border crossing. - Vientiane Times/ANN
