BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): A joint operation recently found a weighing machine unit failing to comply with the Weights and Measures Act as the weighing machine had an expired validity date.

Meanwhile, a business premise was found selling weighing scale machines to consumers without the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT) permit.

The items were ordered to be taken down from display and the business owner given a reminder notice.

SDT officers found 12 weighing machine units used for trading purposes, with one unit having an expired validity date.

The joint operation by the Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) through SDT and the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) through Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Finance and Economy targeted business premises in the Brunei-Muara District. Meanwhile, all five business premises inspected by JPES adhered to Chapter 142 of the Price Control Act. One, also a participant of Brunei Mega Sales 2024, was found complying with the sales conditions.

Business owners were advised to ensure weighing and measuring machines used during trading activities are registered with SDT and in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act 1983 Chapter 151 and Weighs and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994.

Failure to comply is an offence liable on conviction to a BND1,000 fine or imprisonment for three months or both.

Businesses were also advised to comply with Chapter 142 of the Price Control Act and its regulations by not selling controlled items above the set maximum price, displaying prices clearly and accurately as well as adhering to the sales conditions. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
