Cambodians enjoy Khmer New Year in grand style; PM confident country can reach growth target in national message

PHNOM PENH: Thousands of revellers flocked to Phnom Penh’s Wat Phnom to celebrate the start of Khmer New Year this weekend, as reported by Khmer Times.

The Wat Phnom Sankranti saw joyous scenes with young and old, Khmer and foreigner, enjoying the fun.

In his New Year message, Cambodian PM Hun Manet sends his best wishes along with a reaffirmed commitment to bolster growth and prosperity despite global uncertainty.

In his open letter to cheer the Khmer New Year, Prime Minister Hun Manet, with the highest respect, conveyed his best wishes to His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni and Her Majesty Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk and expressed his deep gratitude for their guardian.

The Premier wished his fellow Cambodians best wishes, along with key highlights on increased wages for civil servants and garment workers, expanded social security schemes to address poverty gaps, and pushing development inclusion, quality education, safety, and social order.

He also shared the government’s ongoing endeavours in promoting the country’s infrastructure and logistics, diversifying energy sources, leveraging agriculture products, expanding export markets, and accelerating tourism and investment, as well as creating job opportunities.

Hun Manet remained confident of Cambodia’s economic growth at 6.6 per cent in 2024.
