Hong Kong police hunt for assailants behind road ambush that left one man injured

Hong Kong police are searching for at least six assailants who used two vehicles to trap a Mercedes-Benz car before attacking its passenger with knives in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The force said a silver Toyota seven-seater and a black vehicle intercepted the grey car along Yau Ma Tei’s Man Ying Street at around 3.16am.

A source familiar with the case said: “Six black-clad men carrying knives jumped out from the two vehicles and attacked the 40-year-old passenger [of the Mercedes-Benz].”

Officers have mounted a search for the suspects. No arrests have been made so far.

The victim suffered injuries to his hands and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment, while the 26-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz was unhurt in the knife attack.

The insider said the victim worked at a construction site and the driver was a salesman.

Officers arrested the driver for allegedly possessing an illegal drug after discovering suspected crystal meth in the car.

Police said they were still determining the exact amount and street value of the suspected narcotics.

According to the force, the vehicle abandoned at the scene was fitted with fake number plates.

“Officers also seized a machete and a retractable baton, along with some number plates [in the abandoned vehicle],” the source said.
