BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): In response to noise complaints registered in various regions of the Brunei Muara District on Sunday, March 10, the Ministry of Defence (MinDef) issued a statement on Monday, clarifying that several United States Navy fighter jets had made an unscheduled stopover at the Brunei International Airport.

This brief halt was attributed to technical issues and the need for refueling.

Brunei MinDef further explained that the fighter jets successfully departed from the Brunei International Airport at midnight on the same day, resuming their journey to the next destination.

According to the US Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan, the ten F-18 fighter aircrafts and one C-2A fleet logistics aircraft that made the stopover were from the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT Carrier Strike Group.

In another deveopment, Brunei has announced that Tuesday (March 12) will mark the start of Ramadhan, announced officials after the new moon was not sighted on Sunday night.

Officials from Syar’ie judges, Syariah Court and from State Judiciary Department at the Prime Minister’s Office as well as officers from the Survey Department at the Ministry of Development assigned to the moon-sighting at assigned locations throughout the country were unable to locate the crescent moon of Ramadhan from the DST Tower in Jerudong. Similar moon-sighting events were held at Bukit Agok and Tanjong Batu in Brunei-Muara District, Bukit Ambog in Tutong District and Bukit Lumut in Belait District.

Members of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) led by the Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Badaruddin Awang Othman as the President of MUIB gathered at the Ministry of Religious Affairs to await the outcome of the moon-sighting. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
