PHNOM PENH: National Assembly (NA) president Khuon Sudary encouraged the Cambodian Gems and Jewellry Traders Association (CGJTA) to focus on crafting luxury and high-quality jewellery and gems, emphasising the importance of showcasing fine Khmer design to build trust in both domestic and international markets.
The encouragement was delivered during a Feb 8 meeting between Sudary and CGJTA acting president Chhay Sinath, held to discuss and gather recommendations in preparation for the 15th Cambodia International Jewellery and Gems Fair scheduled for March, as announced by the NA.
During the meeting, Sudary said that peace has facilitated development, allowing the nation to utilise its full potential for societal advancement and the enhancement of its citizens’ lives.
She underscored that the country possesses substantial potential in cultural assets and natural resources. However, she noted that due to the previous war, it experienced a slowdown and had missed opportunities in sectors like jewellery and precious stones.
“This is not just a chance to promote the jewellery sector, but also a platform to attract foreign investors to Cambodia and an opportunity for the country to draw tourists and traders. We also showcase our traditions, customs, national cultural heritage and the art and sculptures created by Khmer artists to our international guests,” Sudary said.
“Cambodia is a land of Sovannaphum, full of cultural treasures and natural resources, so by maintaining peace, Cambodia can achieve progress and development across all sectors, as both are intrinsically linked, like two threads in the same cloth,” she added.
Sinath reported on the association’s past work and achievements in contributing to the sector.
“In addition to conducting business and attracting investors to Cambodia, the association is also involved in social work and humanitarian activities. This includes promoting gender equality, particularly by valuing the contributions of women in sculpture,” he said.
In a separate meeting on the same day with Mao Chandara, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Sinath requested support and security mechanisms from the ministry, to ensure the event’s smooth and successful execution.
The exhibition will showcase a diverse range of items including diamond, luxury and handmade jewellery, gold, silver, platinum, diamonds of all colours, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, crystals, processing equipment, machinery, packaging materials as well as presenting businesses related to jewellery and many other associated services. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
