Car theft ‘guided by TikTok live’ leads to jail

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati Abdul Hamid dismissed the claim that receiving instructions from TikTok could excuse criminal behavioUr as she handed down a one-year jail sentence to a thief at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (Jan 16).

The defendant, Mohammad Ibhnu Yakob@Mohammad Abdul Rahman Mohaimin, 31, attempted to justify his actions by attributing them to instructions he allegedly received from a TikTok user.

However, he asserted that he had forgotten the details of the account.

Prosecutor Radin Wafri bin Radin Sufri outlined that the defendant stole a car from a residence on Jalan ‘C’ RPN Lorong Tengah Seria on Jan 13.

According to the defendant’s account, he was at home using the TikTok app when he stumbled upon a live-streaming video from a user who directed him to the targeted house. Motivated by these instructions, he rode his bicycle to the location.

Upon reaching the house, the defendant rang the doorbell, but receiving no response, he entered an unlocked car in the garage and seized its key. The key belonged to a neighboring vehicle, which he attempted to start unsuccessfully. Seeking assistance, the defendant called a friend to help jumpstart the car, eventually succeeding.

Having accomplished his theft, the defendant returned home and parked the stolen car in Lorong 3 Selatan Seria.

The victimised family discovered the disappearance of their vehicle on the morning of Jan 14, along with the defendant’s abandoned bicycle.

Prompted by the victims’ report, the police apprehended the defendant later that morning. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
