BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran Mohd Yusof Primary School and Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) were selected as recipients of the 4th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Eco-Schools Award in the Primary School and Secondary School Category in Vientiane, Laos.

The Ministry of Development collaborated with Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre (STEP Centre) for the country’s participation.

The awards are set for the green programme coordinator teachers, MSPSBS education officer Mohamad Shahrin bin Mohamad Said, and Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran Mohd Yusof Primary School’s teacher Wong Nee Ek.

Accompanying the recipients are STEP Centre education officer Nurul Fathiah Bazilah binti Haji Brahim as the national focal point of Brunei Darussalam for the Asean Working Group on Environmental Education (AWGEE).

The Asean Eco-Schools Award is held once every four years to recognise schools that cultivate the best practices in the Green School Programme, and encourage the involvement of other schools to carry out the green initiatives.

The nomination of the schools is based on the schools’ active involvement from 2019 to 2023 in environmental care and followed by the respective local or schools abroad.

Additionally, the schools receive gold, silver or bronze status in the Green School Status 2021 based on the criteria set by Asean and conducted by STEP Centre.

The representatives will also participate in workshops and school visits, sharing best practices in Asean schools and the opportunity to interact with representatives of the Asean Eco-Schools Award and Asean Youth Eco-Champions Award (AYECA) recipients from other Asean countries.
