Brunei man fined over RM149,000 for possession of contraband

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 28 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Brunei Magistrate’s Court has ordered a local to settle a BND43,880 (RM149,000) fine after he pleaded guilty to possessing over 23 cartons of smuggled cigarettes.

Mohammad Rafiuddin Samri would have to serve 16 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.

The 39-year-old defendant also admitted to the facts laid out by the Customs prosecutor in court stating that he was found to have kept 23 cartons, 11 packets and seven sticks of cigarettes in a vehicle at a workshop in Kampong Anggerek Desa. BND708 in cash was also found at the scene, confirmed by the defendant to be proceeds of sales of cigarettes.

Senior Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner further heard that the findings was a result of an inspection by the Customs preventive officers at 5.25pm on July 7, 2022.
