Cambodia's football federation president announces resignation after home SEA Games failure

PHNOM PENH, May 8 (Xinhua): Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) president Sao Sokha has announced his resignation following the defeat of Cambodia's under-22 football team in a match against Myanmar in the 32nd South-East Asian (SEA) Games on Sunday.

Cambodia's U22 team lost to Myanmar 2-0 and failed to make the semifinals of the football tournament.

"After the defeat at the SEA Games, I will keep my promise. To show a sense of responsibility, I would like to announce my resignation as President of the Football Federation of Cambodia," Sokha wrote on his official Facebook page late on Sunday.

He also offered an apology to the Cambodian people for not being able to bring honor to the country as the host of the 32nd SEA Games.

Last week, Sokha announced that he would resign if Cambodia's U22 team could not reach the semifinals of the 32nd SEA Games.

Cambodia is hosting the 32nd SEA Games from May 5 to 17, and the event will see athletes competing in 579 events across 36 sports. - Xinhua
