Two foreigners get hefty fines for contraband possession

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): The Magistrate’s Court on Monday (March 13) ordered an Indonesian man to settle a BND68,600 fine for possessing smuggled cigarettes and a Filipina to settle a BND10,500 fine for possessing smuggled cigarettes, liquor and beer.

Mohamad Sili, 44, would have to serve 16 months’ jail in default of payment while Jukiet Tumitit Padi, 44, would have to serve 10 months’ jail in default of payment.

Magistrate Syaffina Shahif was informed by the customs prosecutor that Mohamad Sili was found keeping 69 cartons, one packet and 27 sticks of cigarettes at a house in Kampong Delima Satu when customs preventive officers conducted an inspection at 2.40pm on March 11.

Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati Abdul Hamid heard from the Customs prosecutor that Jukiet Tumitit Padi was found keeping 32 bottles of liquor, 24 cans of beer and two cartons, five packets of cigarettes at a house in Kampong Mumong, Belait District when customs preventive officers conducted an inspection at 8.32am on March 6.

The court ordered the cigarettes and booze to be destroyed.
