1,300 join Sunday fun run in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): Prince Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) flagged off participants of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 Fun Run on Sunday (March 12).

The event, which attracted 1,300 participants including people with different abilities, was organised by the BDNOC and supported by the Youth and Sports Department (JBS) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

The prince was greeted on arrival at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ’Ali Saifuddien in the capital by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Nazmi Mohamad.

The event began with a group photo of the participants, followed by a speech from Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Project and Operations Manager Wissam Trkmani.

He thanked the OCA, the Chinese National Olympic Committee and the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC) for the opportunity to feel the excitement of Asian Games 2022 by organising the fun run.

It continued with a speech from HAGOC Committee’s Director of Department of Law Yu Xuekun who said the Asian Games will take place in Hangzhou, China’s Zhejiang province from Sept 23 to Oct 10.

He said the fun run is an Asian Games tradition and is a way for the international audience to get involved while encouraging ties between peoples of all walks to promote the Olympic spirit.

Yu said the fun run in Bandar Seri Begawan symbolises good relations between the two cities and will help to spread joy and increase public interest in Hangzhou Asian Games.

The prince then sounded the horn to begin the run. He also joined in the fun run accompanied by Pengiran Anak ‘Aliiyah Amalul Bulqiah.

The top 10 finishers received prizes presented by the prince.
