Philippines logs 1,283 new Covid-19 cases and 24 more deaths on Friday (Dec 2)

MANILA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua): The Philippines reported 1,283 new Covid-19 infections on Friday, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the South-East Asian country to 4,038,716.

The Department of Health (DOH) said the number of active cases rose to 18,899, while 24 more patients died from Covid-19 complications, taking the country's death toll to 64,682.

Metro Manila, the capital region with over 13 million people, tallied 457 new cases.

The number of daily Covid-19 cases is expected to rise this month as people attend family reunions and social gatherings to celebrate the holiday season.

DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said daily cases could reach over 3,000 if people ignore health safety when in public.

She added that the country's Covid-19 hospital utilization remains low at 16 percent.

The Philippines reported its highest Covid-19 single-day tally of 39,004 new cases on Jan. 15.

The country, with a population of around 110 million, has fully vaccinated over 73.7 million people. - Xinhua
