Non-halal yeast ordered to be isolated

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): A supermarket selling the NOW Food brand’s Brewer’s Yeast Powder was ordered to isolate the product to the non-halal section on Tuesday (Nov 15) after authorities said it was produced through the production process of an alcoholic drink.

An investigation by the Halal Food Control Division under the Syariah Affairs Department confirmed the allegation after public complaints, according to a statement by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA).

The yeast being a product of an alcoholic drink production process was also confirmed via NOW Food’s – the manufacturer – website, said the ministry.

MoRA urged all importers, supermarkets and shops selling the item to immediately isolate it from halal products.

The ministry reminded owners, managers, entrepreneurs, suppliers and importers to be more sensitive to products sold to the public and ensure halal products are not mixed with non-halal products to protect the interest of the Muslim community.

Information about the sale of non-halal products openly can be made directly to the Halal Food Control Division at the Syariah Affairs Department by calling the hotline 7166222 or any division office.
