BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Sept 25 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Tropical Storm Noru will indirectly affect the Sultanate’s weather and cause windy and active weather conditions in the next few days, especially from Sunday until Wednesday (Sept 28).
According to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD), Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, the Sultanate is currently towards the end of the Southwest Monsoon period, where southwesterly wind surge is still dominant with stable atmospheric condition.
As of 5am yesterday, Tropical Storm Noru was observed at coordinates 16.5°N 128.4°E, at the east of the Philippines Sea, some 2,000 kilometres away from Brunei, and is forecast to move westwards of the South China Sea and expected to be upgraded to a typhoon in the next few days.
Squally showers and, at times, heavy rain are expected to affect many areas of the country with wind speeds reaching up to 50 kilometres per hour on land and up to 60 kilometres per hour at sea during or near squally showers.
Over Brunei waters, the sea state is generally slight at between 0.4 to one metre. However, wave heights may reach rough state up to three metres near squally showers.
BDMD advised the public to take precautions with respect to the forecasted windy and active weather conditions as there are risks of falling trees during windy conditions and flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near river banks during heavy rain and high tide.
