VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): Two people died when the 12-wheel truck they were travelling in left the road and fell down a precipice in a mountainous area of Luang Prabang province on Sunday (Aug 21).

A local emergency rescue team said the accident occurred around 22:30 in Sibounheuang village, Nambak district. The driver apparently lost control of the truck and it plunged down a steep hillside. When rescue personnel arrived at the scene, they found two people dead inside the vehicle.

The victims were identified as Bounthan, 49, and Amphai, 43, from Han village in Hongsa district, Xayaboury province.

The rescue team used specialised equipment to cut open the truck so they could remove the bodies, which were taken to Luang Prabang hospital.

Many accidents occur on roads in the north of Laos. In May, two people died and two others were injured when the truck they were travelling in left the road and fell down a precipice in a mountainous area of Oudomxay province.

Roads in northern Laos are hazardous if motorists don’t drive carefully, because of the many bends and sharp drops.

People travelling in the north are advised to keep their eyes open and remain alert as many sections of road are in poor condition, narrow and mountainous, which increases the risk of an accident.
