PHNOM PENH, June 11 (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The Cambodian Ministry of Health on Saturday reported zero new Covid-19 cases and no new deaths.

As of June 11, Cambodia had recorded a total of 136,262 Covid-19 cases with 133,206 recoveries and 3,056 fatalities.

In the first 22 weeks of this year, dengue fever cases have increased by over 100 per cent compared to the same period last year, with over 1,300 cases recorded along with three deaths.

However, the Ministry of Health also said in a January-May report which was released late on June 10 that a total of 1,354 dengue cases have now been reported.

Based on their entomology surveillance and weather factors which saw increasing rain earlier this year, the ministry concluded that dengue cases will increase this rainy season in some provinces, especially those which have more construction sites and a high population.

Minister of Health Mam Bun Heng called on the public and local authorities to jointly prevent the birth of mosquitos with the slogan “my family are role models because my home has no mosquito larvae”.

“Caretakers and parents of all children and local authorities have to be actively destroying the places where the mosquitoes live. Construction site owners and workers at each construction site have to clean the environment around their construction sites,” he said.

He also urged all people to live a good lifestyle by making their houses clean, letting sunlight into their houses and placing their clothes in an orderly manner. The most important thing is to drain sources of standing water such as rubber tires or jugs near your home where they can breed.

The minister warned that dengue can be fatal if patients do not get treatment at a professional hospital in a timely manner, but instead get treated by an unprofessional private health service. It is also dangerous if patients take aspirin to treat the disease.

Research by the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control showed that yellow fever mosquitoes, which cause dengue, like living and breeding in the water in old tires up to 11 times more than in other objects.
