Brunei store ordered to remove non-halal shoes from shelf

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): A business premise selling Pink Princess children’s shoes, found to be made from pig skin, was ordered to immediately keep the product from being sold openly, the Syariah Affairs Department at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) said on Monday (June 6).

The shoes (pic) were sent to the Scientific Laboratory Services Department at the Ministry of Health for testing following a public complaint.

Based on analysis, it was found that pig skin was used to make the inner lining of the shoes.

To safeguard the welfare of the Muslim community in the Sultanate, the department instructed the store to segregate the shoes from other products.

In addition, Muslim consumers are advised against buying and wearing the shoes.

The MoRA reminded owners, managers, entrepreneurs, traders, suppliers and importers of consumer goods to be vigilant in vetting imported consumer goods that will be sold to the public to ensure that halal products are not mixed with non-halal ones.

Complaints can be made to the Syariah Affairs Department through the Halal Food Control Division by calling 7166222 or visit its offices nationwide.
