Vietnam govt says it has successfully produced vaccine against African swine fever

HANOI, June 4 (Bernama): Vietnam has successfully produced a vaccine against African swine fever (ASF), Deputy Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Phung Duc Tien said.

The NAVET-ASFVAC vaccine is produced by NAVETCO National Veterinary Joint Stock Company and is expected to be priced between 34,000 VND to 36,000 VND (US$1.47 to US$1.55) per dose, Vietnam news agency (VNA) reported.

According to Tien, although more than 4,000 studies related to the virus and vaccine development by scientists have been published, there has been no commercial vaccine against the disease in the world so far.

To date, no country in the world has announced successful production of a commercial vaccine against disease. Therefore, the potential for exporting the vaccine produced in Vietnam is huge, VNA quoted him added.

ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, whose mortality rate can reach 100 per cent.

Althought it does not pose danger to human health, it has devastating effects on the pig populations and the farming economy. - Bernama
