BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): The batch of Jif-branded peanut butter on the market in the Sultanate is safe for consumption, said the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA) in a press release on Thursday (June 2).
The statement was issued in the wake of reports of the product being recalled overseas due to the possibility of salmonella contamination.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) updated the BDFA on the matter and explained that the recalled products include those with lot codes 1274425 and 2140425.
BDFA also contacted the Jif importer in Brunei Darussalam and was informed that the affected batch has not been brought into the country.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
It can be found in meat, poultry, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and processed food, should hygiene aspects be ignored or if they are not processed properly.
BDFA also reminded the public that under Section 9 of subsection (1) subparagraph (i) of the Public Health (Food) Act (Chapter 182), any individual who prepares, sells or imports a food item that can harm health may be imprisoned for five years, fined or both.
