Trains prove to be most popular among year-end travellers in Thailand

BANGKOK, Jan 1, 2021 (The Nation Thailand/ANN): As the year came to an end, most Thais preferred to use the train to travel for holidays and also go back to their hometown to visit their loved ones and friends.

More than 1.3 million people used Thailand’s railway services in the last two days of 2021, with more than 90,000 people travelling upcountry.

The five lines that saw the highest number of passengers were: • Southern: 26,852 passengers; • Northeast: 26,420 passengers; • Northern: 23,402 passengers; • Eastern: 11,010 passengers; • Mahachai-Mae Khlong: 6,066 passengers.

Meanwhile, more than 1.28 million people used rail services in Greater Bangkok on December 29 and 30: • Airport Rail Link: 57,446 passengers; • SRT Red Line: 15,590 passengers; • MRT Purple Line: 50,721 passengers; • MRT Blue Line: 355,242 passengers; • BTS: 805,331 passengers.

In an seperate incident, a train crashed into a pick-up truck that was trying to cross the tracks in Nakhon Ratchasima at around 11am on December 30. Two people were slightly injured and taken to Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, In his annual year-end message, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn conveyed blessings and good wishes to all Thais, saying he hoped people would be happy throughout the year.

The King’s speech was delivered from Dusit Palace on Friday (Dec 31) at 8pm.

“New Year is a good occasion for us to think about other persons and express good wishes among each other for mutual happiness and prosperity,” His Majesty said.

“A person’s happiness and that of the country are inseparable. When facing problems or illnesses, we must not think only about ourselves, but work together as a society. By using compassion, understanding, unity and patience, everyone in society can overcome any hardship together.

“May the Holy Triple Gem and all the sacred things that you revere, as well as the virtues of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, protect your families and bless you with good health, strong spirit and intelligence that will help you and the country achieve happiness and prosperity together.” - The Nation Thailand/ANN
