JAKARTA, Dec 4 (dpa): The new leader of an Islamic State-linked terrorist group and four of his men were killed in a firefight with government troops in the southern Philippines, the military had announced on Friday (Dec 3).

The clash erupted on Thursday in the town of Mamasapano in Maguindanao province, 960 kilometres south of Manila, said Major General Juvymax Uy, an army infantry division commander.

Troops recovered the bodies of Asim Karinda, alias Abu Azim, the new leader of the Daulah Islamiyah group, and four of his men after the firefight, Uy said.

Karinda, an alleged bomb maker, had taken over the leadership of the Daulah Islamiyah after its top commander was killed last month, the military said.

The Daulah Islamiyah is one of the terrorist groups in the Philippines that are linked to the international terrorist group Islamic State.

It was behind numerous bombings in the southern region of Mindanao, including a night market bombing in Davao City, the home town of President Rodrigo Duterte, in September 2016, killing 15 people.

It was also responsible for the extortion and killings of businessmen in Mindanao, the military said.- dpa
