Philippines logs 18,449 new Covid-19 cases as virus total now tops 2.5 million


MANILA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua): The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported 18,449 new Covid-19 infections on Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the South-East Asian country to 2,509,177.

The DOH also reported that 93 more people died from Covid-19 complications, pushing the country's death toll to 37,494.

DOH epidemiology bureau director Alethea De Guzman said the number of Covid-19 cases in Metro Manila and the rest of the country is starting to slow down and the country is now under "moderate risk" classification Covid-19 infections.

"Metro Manila showed a sudden downward trend with reported cases decreasing by 16 percent versus the previous seven days," she said in a televised press conference.

The Philippines, which has around 110 million population, has tested more than 19 million people since the outbreak in January 2020. - Xinhua
