Myanmar drops charges against more arrestees due to suspension of trials amid pandemic; as many as 150 people freed


YANGON, Aug. 14 (Eleven Media Group/ANN): Myanmar's State Administration Council has closed and withdrawn cases against more arrestees on long detention days for lack of going to the trials due to the Covid-19 health disciplines, according to the council's order on Saturday.

Among the 227 fugitives from health and education sectors and other sectors, charges have been dropped to 150 people and the rest cases are being investigated to close the cases according to an announcement made on August 13.

It said cases will be dropped to government staff, intellectual and intelligentsia, civilians from all walks of life, who desire to return to Myanmar, apart from those committed murder, robbery, setting fire, landmine attacks, attacking security forces purposefully, attacking civil staff and public, destroying stated-owned buildings and private buildings, those involved in CDM movement deeply can connect police stations in states and regions with trust and phone numbers of these police stations have also published since August 3, 2021.

From August 4 to August 12, 227 people including health and education sectors and other walks of life connect these phone numbers directly or via their relatives. After investigating them with police records in states and regions, cases of 150 people were dropped and the rest cases are being investigated to close cases.

The rest can also connect with confidence in the government’s sincere will, it stated.

The order also said that all criminal cases within hearing for those prosecuted at relevant courts for any crimes on Feb. 1 and before that date will be closed and the culprits will be released from the cases, except those prosecuted in the cases related to the Counter-Terrorism Law, the Money Laundering Law, the Anti-Human Trafficking Law, the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law, among others.

The council had dropped some criminal cases with certain offenses and released defendants on July 20 this year as the courts suspended hearings of the cases for Covid-19 health rules.- Eleven Media Group/ANN
