MANILA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua): The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) reported on Monday 8,167 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the South-East Asian country to 1,605,762.
The death toll climbed to 28,093 after 77 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH added.
The country reported more than 8,000 new cases of Covid-19 for the fourth straight day.
The Philippines, which has a population of around 110 million, has tested more than 15 million people since the outbreak in January 2020.
The ninth death from the highly infectious Covid-19 Delta variant has been reported, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said at an online briefing.
Of the 216 Delta cases detected so far, Vergeire said 165 were locally transmitted, adding the DOH "assumes" that the Delta variant drives the spike of coronavirus cases in the country.
Vergeire said that the country's hospitalization use has also increased.
Metro Manila will revert to hard lockdown on Friday to curb the spread of the Delta variant. Other parts of the country will also be placed under heightened restrictions.
Metro Manila mayors will also enforce longer curfew hours from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. when the capital shifts to a two-week most restrictive quarantine restrictions on Friday to limit the people's movement.
This is the second time that the government imposes the strictest lockdown measures this year. The same restrictions were also imposed in March when cases surged.- Xinhua
