Vietnam's total confirmed Covid-19 cases surpass 10,000; death toll at 58

HANOI, June 12 (Xinhua): Vietnam reported 261 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, including 259 locally transmitted and two imported, bringing the total tally to 10, 241, according to the country's Ministry of Health.

Among the community cases, 246 were reported in quarantine facilities or lockdown areas. In terms of localities, 125 were detected in the northern epidemic hotspot Bac Giang province, 84 in the southern Ho Chi Minh City, and 34 in the northern Bac Ninh province.

Most of the cases were contacts of previously confirmed cases or linked to the clusters of infections in the localities.

Nationwide, as many as 3,827 Covid-19 patients have so far recovered, up 23 from Friday, and nearly 188, 700 people are being quarantined and monitored.

The health ministry also announced that a 64-year-old Covid-19 patient with severe underlying conditions has died, bringing the total number of deaths related to coronavirus in the country to 58.

Also on Saturday, the ministry approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, making it the fourth Covid-19 vaccine licensed in the South-East Asian country after AstraZeneca, Sputnik V and China's Sinopharm.

As of Saturday, Vietnam has registered a total of 8, 609 domestically transmitted Covid-19 cases, including 7,039 detected since the start of the latest outbreak in late April, according to the health ministry. - Xinhua
