BEIJING: Donning a red qipao dress, Meng Qingmei waits anxiously in front of the Experimental High School attached to Beijing Normal University where her daughter is taking the annual college entrance exam.

The exam started yesterday morning. Considered the world’s most gruelling test, the exam, better known as the gaokao, saw a record 10.78 million candidates signing up this year.
