Vietnam April trade deficit US$$1.2bil vs US$1.2bil in surplus in March; coffee exports down 22.1%

HANOI, May 15 (Reuters): Vietnam reported a trade deficit of US$1.22 billion in April, swinging from a surplus of US$1.2 billion in March, government customs data released this week has showed.

Exports in April fell 10.5% from March to $26.55 billion, while imports were down 2.4% to $27.77 billion, the Customs Department said in a statement.

For the first four months of this year, exports rose 29.6% from a year earlier to $104.94 billion, while imports were up 31.8% to $103.31 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $1.63 billion for the period, it said.

Vietnam's coffee exports in April were down 22.1% from March at 132,111 tonnes, while rice exports in the same period rose 45.1% against the preceding month, government customs data released on Wednesday showed.

For the first four months of 2021, Vietnam exported 584,981 tonnes of coffee, down 14.3% from a year earlier, Vietnam Customs said in a statement.

Coffee export revenue in the Jan-Apr period rose 7.3% to around $1.1 billion, it said.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's rice exports in April were up 45.1% from the previous month at 782,159 tonnes, the statement said.

The country's rice exports in the first four months fell 6.9% year on year to 1.97 million tonnes, it said. - Reuters
