Brunei govt sets aside over BND1.95M for poor this year

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 19 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): The Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) held a distribution event at Utama Mohammad Salleh Mosque in the Temburong District, where Zakat money amounting to BND15,230 was presented to 25 family heads and their 81 dependents.

Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs cum MUIB Vice President Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar was the guest of honour.

A total of BND1,957,580 has been allocated and will be distributed nationwide this year to 3,130 family heads and 10,776 dependents falling within the poor and destitute category.

The funds are derived from Zakat Fitrah (individual tithe) and Zakat Harta (property tithe) collected last year.

Earlier, Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) officials observed the holy month of Ramadhan with a Tedarus Al-Quran at the mosque.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by the deputy minister, followed with a Tadabbur Al-Quran by Mosque Affairs Officer Muhammad Naqib bin Haji Awang. A Tahlil and recitation of Doa Arwah were also carried out.

MoRA will conduct a Tedarus Al-Quran at Al-Mashor Mosque of Kampong Sungai Mau in the Belait District on April 21, at 4.45pm. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
