Indonesia: Batch of raw materials of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine arrives as virus total now goes above 1.6 million

JAKARTA, April 18 (Xinhua): A batch of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine raw materials arrived here on Sunday at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said it was part of the agreed plan for this year.

Indonesia's state-owned pharmaceutical company Bio Farma has been producing vaccine doses using the Sinovac raw materials.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 4,585 within one day to 1,604,348, with the death toll adding by 96 to 43,424, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

According to the ministry, 4,873 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,455,065.

The virus has spread to all the country's 34 provinces.

Specifically, within the past 24 hours, Jakarta recorded 950 new cases, West Java 769, Central Java 396, Riau 330 and East Java 241.

No new positive cases were found in West Nusa Tenggara province.

In a new development, Indonesia has seized a foreign fishing vessel in the Malacca Strait, according to Indonesia's Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs on Sunday.

The ministry's Secretary General Antam Novambar said officers seized the vessel on Saturday.

The vessel with five crew members was fishing illegally in the Indonesian waters using prohibited trawling gear, according to Indonesian authorities. - Xinhua
