NEW DELHI, March 7 (Xinhua)): India's Covid-19 tally rose to 11,210,799 on Sunday as 18,711 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the federal health ministry.
According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 157,756 as 100 Covid-19 patients died since Saturday morning.
There are still 184,523 active cases in the country, while 10,868,520 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment. There was an increase of 4,219 active cases during the previous 24 hours, out of which 4,060 were reported from the south-western state of Maharashtra.
The number of daily active cases had been on the rise over the past few days, even as another wave of Covid-19 looms large in India. Till a few weeks ago, the number of daily cases had come down below 10,000.
As many as 9,102 new cases were reported on Jan. 25 and 26, which was the lowest in the previous 237 days.
Phase 2 of the ongoing Covid-19 vaccine drive began in the country on Monday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking his first dose of the Covid--19 vaccine.
Phase 2 of the vaccination drive would inoculate those above the age of 60 and those over 45 with comorbidities.
Jan 16 was a crucial day in India's fight against the pandemic as the nationwide vaccination drive was kicked off during the day. So far over 20 million people, mainly health workers, have been vaccinated across the country.
Meanwhile, the federal government has ramped up Covid-19 testing facilities across the country, even as over 221 million tests have been conducted so far.
As many as 221,430,507 tests were conducted till Saturday, out of which 737,830 tests were conducted on Saturday alone, said the latest data issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Sunday.
The national capital Delhi, which has been one of the most Covid-19 affected places in the country, has been witnessing fewer cases over the past several months. As many as 321 new cases and zero death was registered in the national capital through Saturday.
