Lao govt urges public to stay vigilant against dengue, Covid-19

VIENTIANE, Feb 13 (Xinhua): The Laos Ministry of Health urged officials and people across the country to stay vigilant and help control the spread of dengue fever.

Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control under the Lao Ministry of Health Sisavath Soutthaniraxay told a press conference here on Thursday that 115 people have been diagnosed with dengue fever since January.

Sisavath suggested five simple measures as the most effective method of dengue control which is being practiced by households across the region.

These measures consist of closing and sealing all unused containers, flushing out all water vessels, placing small guppy fish in water jars as they eat mosquito larvae, cleaning areas around homes, and remembering to do these four tasks each week.

If people fall ill, they should suspect that dengue may be the cause of their illness and get a blood test at a hospital, Sisavath added.

According to the World Health Organization, dengue fever is one of the fastest emerging infections, with Thailand, Laos, the Philippines and Singapore also seeing high incidences. The number of cases in the Western Pacific Region has more than doubled over the past 10 years.

Meanwhile, the Laos people have shown their appreciation to China on the internet or when interviewed with Xinhua, after receiving the China-donated Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine on Monday.

Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong officially handed over the vaccine to Vice President of Laos Phankham Viphavanh in Lao capital Vientiane on Monday.

The Lao side has found the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine to be safe and effective in the earlier emergency use in certain high-risk personnel in Laos, he said.

According to the Lao Ministry of Health, the priority group in line for vaccinations are medical staff, officials working at land border crossings and airports, and elderly people living in risky communities such as border areas where there have been reports of illegal migration.

The total number of Covid-19 cases recorded in Laos remains at 45, and 41 of them have recovered. Another four infected cases are treated in designated hospitals.
