HONG KONG (China Daily/ANN): The number of unemployed persons in Hong Kong more than doubled in the third quarter when compared during the same period last year, according to a government survey.
According to the Quarterly Report on General Household Survey released on Monday (Nov 30) afternoon, the number of unemployed reached 259,800 in Q3 compared to 120,000 during the same period in 2019. The figure is also higher than the 240,700 recorded in the second quarter of this year.
The city’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rose from 2.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2019, to 6.2 per cent in Q2 of this year, to 6.4 per cent in Q3, according to the survey.
The survey findings showed that the number of unemployed among men increased to 154,900 in Q3 from 69,600 during the same period last year.
The number of unemployed women also more than doubled from 50,400 in the third quarter of 2019 to 104,900 in Q3 of 2020, according to the survey.
The survey also showed that the number of underemployed persons in the city more than tripled to 149,100 in Q3 from just 41,400 during the same period last year.
Among women, the number shot up from 10,000 in the third quarter of 2019 to 64,600 in Q3 of 2020, according to the survey.
The number of men who were underemployed also increased to 84,500 in Q3 2020 compared to 31,400 during the same period last year. - China Daily/Asia News Network
