JAKARTA, Nov 12 (Xinhua): Indonesian President Joko Widodo hoped that the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) Travel Corridor Arrangement (TCA) would be operational in the first quarter of 2021.
"The ASEAN TCA is expected to create optimism that our economic activities could be reactivated by applying health protocols in a disciplined manner. Our people could not wait any longer as they want to see a reawakening of our region," Widodo said in his speech at the virtual 37th Asean Summit on Thursday.
Widodo proposed the travel corridor arrangement at the 36th AseanSummit in 2020.
In an effort to implement the arrangement, the Indonesian president encouraged the Asean Coordinating Council and the ASEAN sectoral bodies to move fast and efficiently.
According to him, Asean should soon materialise the establishment of a temporary fast lane and tight health protocols on people's departures and arrivals, use an integrated digital platform in the region, and decide on the ports of entry.
The travel corridor arrangement was expected to be issued at the 37th AseanSummit which took place virtually from Thursday (Nov 12).
Meanwhile, The Covid-19 cases continued to surge in Indonesia as it rose by 4,173 within one day to 452,291, with the death toll adding by 97 to 14,933, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.
It's case-total and death toll is the highest in South-East Asia and also among the highest in the Asian region.
According to the ministry, 3,102 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the number of recovered patients to 382,084.
The virus has spread to all the country's 34 provinces.
Specifically, within the past 24 hours, Jakarta recorded 831 new cases, West Java 733, Central Java 608, East Java 270 and East Kalimantan 235.
